Human beings have been inspired by their nearest relatives, the citizens of the animal kingdom, since they first began creating art, and are still at it today. The Kunsthaus collection and depots contain ample, precious testimony, much of it unknown to visitors. These works show us the various relationships enjoyed by humans and animals, as, like scientists in the field, artists immortalize, warts and all, on paper and canvas beasts familiar and exotic. Beasts often appear as our companions, whether in the form of heraldic emblem, lapdog or stuffed animal, while when it comes to livestock the iconography can be different – in the end, you've got to put the bacon on the table; and certain motifs can be traced throughout the various ages of human history. Join us on a suspenseful journey through the Kunsthaus collection and the annals of art!
