
Although it started off with a break, Matthias Zinn's work has meanwhile received increasing attention as documented by many exhibitions, above all his telling presence at «Ambigu-Contemporary Painting between Abstraction and Narration», where Kunstmuseum St.Gallen presented programmatic positions in contemporary painting. Zinn's work group was shown in a dialogue with Raoul De Keyser, whose oeuvre has long focused on the ambivalent gap between abstraction and figuration. In this confrontation Zinn, with his ever more clearly visible position, freed himself once and for all from his early work in the style of Pop Art. He has very consequently departed from the tempting surface, so as to paint his way to the bottom of things, as it were, and accepted the all-round challenge painting requires.
