Robert Mapplethorpe & Patti Smith

Robert Mapplethorpe has been widely recognized as a giant in late 20th century photography. His stylistic depictions of celebrities, male nudes, and flowers had made him one of the most successful New York artists during the 1980s until his death from AIDS in 1989. This documentary was made a year before his death, and includes various interviews with him, and others close to him.

In his 20s, he took up residency with musician Patti Smith. There he spent his time, with Patti Smith as his subject, beginning to perfect his technique by using polaroids, as well as collaborating on several films.
